The guide
Two jackets, two jobs. The right pick comes down to temperature, weather, and how hard you plan to push.
Lightweight shell
Insulated jacket
Runnur rule of thumb
Dress for the run 10–15°F warmer than the thermometer reads. You'll be cold for the first mile — that's the right amount of cold.
Common questions
Weather resistance (wind- and water-repellent fabric), breathability through vented panels or air-permeable membranes, a packable build that stuffs into its own pocket, and reflective hits for low-light runs.
A lightweight shell handles 45–60°F runs and light rain. An insulated jacket is built for sub-40°F where you need core warmth without overheating.
Most are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof — the tradeoff keeps them breathable. For heavy rain look for a taped-seam shell rated 10k mm or higher.
Athletic, not tight. Room to layer a long-sleeve underneath, with sleeves long enough to cover your wrists when arms are extended forward.
